Also a Chian family began importing citrus (mandarins) from India at around 1860-1862. At first, they cultivated their own lands and then the cultivation of the citrus was spread across the Kampos area.
The area of Kampos is characterized by affluent groundwater that favors the cultivation of the "golden apples of the Hesperides," as they were called by the ancient Greeks. For this reason the Kampos of Chios changed very quickly into a vast orange grove.
The variety of mandarins produced in Chios Island is unique. The Mandarins of Chios is known as the best mandarins ever.
Early in November starts the collection of the oranges and ends early in December. Because oranges ripen in winter, while mandarins earlier, it is clear that these vulnerable trees face also the difficult weather conditions.
The harvest of citrus often is in danger from the storms so the farmers have to face the economic difficulties resulting from a potential destruction of their crops. For this reason they were forced to find new ways to protect their crops.
Citrus fruits are also used for the production of sweets and essential oils.
